When I joined Weigh of Life, I was excited and optimistic about working out my body and at the same time having fun. I had always been content with my body; I loved myself as I was. It was the realization that my extra weight would attract more health issues in the future, which made me start to do something about it. As the months passed, I started to lose weight and I thought to myself how great it was that I am staying active and having fun doing so.

With Weigh of Life, I learned how to each healthy and passed these new habits on to my family. As of right now, I have lost 50 pounds and dropped 8 sizes. It’s satisfying knowing that you can accomplish what you truly put your mind to. I like that I can now say, “I can do this. I am doing this.” Thank you to Weigh of Life and all others who have always been there to help, motivate, and most importantly, help us feel better about ourselves.

I’ve changed my life – I am happy and healthy! Let me tell you how I did it.

I used to weigh 230 pounds. I would go into the store to buy new clothes and leave, empty-handed and crying. I couldn’t walk very far before my knees would swell up and hurt.

My diabetes was out of control and my blood pressure was too high. I wanted to loose weight so I tried lots of diets and diet products. With every attempt, I would lose about 30 pounds but then I’d gain back 60! I finally had enough, I was so unhappy.

I came to Weigh of Life to dance because my friend thought I’d like it. There I had fun and started to feel better. At Weigh of Life I learned about eating better at the nutrition classes. I wanted a more structured diet so I joined Weight Watchers while I went to Weigh of Life 3 times a week to be with friends and dance. I learned that losing weight is not easy and I’m still working on it. But I’ve already lost 60 pounds. Now I’m happy, I can tell that I’m stronger and fit.

My advice is to think about your health. Live longer to enjoy your children and your grandchildren. My whole family eats better, we eat more fruits and vegetables, now and no more soda. People notice that I’m happy and fit and ask me how I did it. I always say, come to Weigh of Life and see for yourself. It’s fun, you can be with friends and you’ll feel better.

I’m so much more handsome now, than in the beginning. Actually, I weigh about 65 pounds less and I have so much more energy.” That’s what I told Jan when she asked me to give my testimonial about the last 3 and half years I’ve been coming to Weigh of Life.

I wake up Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday mornings, eager to come to exercise. I know that sounds crazy, but I really enjoy it. Dancing at Weigh of Life three times a week has made me healthier and fit.

When I started, my blood pressure was too high, now it’s normal. I’m able to keep up with my kids and my 5 year old granddaughter. We don’t sit around and watch TV; we dance, play outside and have lots of fun.

Although I’m often the only man in this Weigh of Life class, I don’t mind, because everyone is friendly. And my wife loves that I come, too, because now I know so many more dance steps. We go dancing often and we’re the ones who are out on the floor the whole time – having a great time! I encourage other men who want to get fit to come to Weigh of Life. They have energetic teachers who lead us through a good work out with lots of good music.

When I first started dancing at WOL, I was disappointed that my extra weight didn’t just fall off! I learned at WOL nutrition classes that I needed to change my diet – not so much which foods I ate, but the amount of foods I ate. Once I started to increase the vegetables and fruits and decrease the rice, tortillas and bread, I lost more than 40 pounds in one year! Now, I translate Jan’s nutrition classes into Spanish and help members understand about how their diet affects their weight. My family eats better, too.

WOL has been a good influence not only on my health, but also on other parts of my life. I am now going back to school to get my GED and helping to run this organization which has grown from one site to four. I’ve helped people get healthier and I’m more active in the community. I represent WOL in business at the bank, in different neighborhoods doing outreach, and with WOL instructors and members. I’m proud of WOL and its impact on my neighborhood and I can tell I’m stronger because I have grown with WOL.
